Introduction
The Department of Philosophy is one of the most prestigious seats of learning in the campus. It is one of the four Departments of Philosophy in the country to have a “Centre for Advanced Studies” status. The Department, which is the oldest Department of Philosophy in Rajasthan, was established in the year 1950 at University of Rajaputana, Jaswant College Building, Jodhpur and later shifted to University of Rajasthan, Jaipur in 1960. Internationally recognized philosopher, Prof. P.T. Raju was its founder head. Philosophers like Prof. V.H. Date, Prof. Daya Krishna, Prof. Govind Chandra Pandey, Prof. Biswambhar Pahi, Prof. Chandmal Sharma and Prof. Ramchandra Gandhi, served the Department and added to its glory. Among these scholars Prof. Daya Krishna and Prof. Biswambhar Pahi have been felicitated by the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award of Indian Council of Philosophical Research, apex body for research in philosophy in India.
The Department has published more than forty books on different streams of the discipline. The Department was granted UGC’s University Leadership Project in 1977. It was selected for Special Assistance Program (SAP), under DSA in 1979 and subsequently it completed four phases of SAP till 2005. In 2004, the department was selected for UGC’S ASHISS Program, which continued till 2007. In 2005 it was upgraded as Centre for Advanced Studies, whose second phase is ongoing at present, since 2015.
